Lay Down
A song about insecurity
One of my biggest sticking points in crafting the songs for More Better Band has been to try to sneak in some real talking points when I can. Although we have songs about Two Tone Ska, robbing banks and falling in love with aliens I didn’t want to just stick to the typical reggae and ska tropes. When we started playing this song I knew it had a little bit of a different feel and the hook “Lay Down, before you get laid out” came immediately. But in all honesty I had no idea what that meant.
We played this song without me having a solid set of lyrics for…a while. I have no idea if that’s how everyone does it but sometimes it takes a while for the PERFECT lyrics to come and that requires a lot of improv. Since live settings like dive bars don’t usually provide the highest fidelity I was able to sing tons of different variations until I settled with what you hear.
The song that manifested is really about being ok with be loved and respected. That may sound vein but I personally struggle with a lot of insecurities that tend to dampen my ability to enjoy certain things. I try my hardest to take a beat and enjoy the forest for the trees when I can but it’s tough. This song is essentially an inner monologue to that struggle. I speak about how a certain thought process can take something so amazing, like a great community, and make it feel like you're being crowded instead of celebrated.
Full disclosure i’ve listened to this song as a source of therapy many time and I do not like listening to my own music. I really think this is a unique topic for a reggae song and I personally haven’t found many other songs in this genre tackling mental health so head on. I’m proud to be able to bring that conversation to this atmosphere and as always if anyone ever wants to talk you can always reach us on all platforms. We all have good and bad days and lucky for us the music is there to catch us when we fall.
If you know any other songs in the genre talking about this PLEASE let us know because id love to create a playlist of these type of compositions.
Below is the full lyrics to the song, if you have any questions let us know.
Thanks for reading and we can’t wait to release this to world!
Lay down ft. Lost Tropics
Everyone around you
Is not trying to drown you
But you don’t know
But you gotta put a sound to
The things that bring down so
You can grow
I’ve been tryna tell you that
There’s wonder in the world that’s all around
And I’ve been tryna tell you that
There’s more to life then staring at that ground
Lay down
Before you get laid out
Lay down
Before you get laid out
Take a look around you
The people that surround you
They love you so
Time and time again I told
They’re not waiting up
Just hold you down
Hold you down
I’ve been tryna tell you that
There’s wonder in the world that’s all around
And I’ve been tryna tell you that
There’s more to life then staring at that ground
Lay down
Before you get laid out
Lay down
Before you get laid out
Feelings like this creep into your mind
Destroy you deep within
The sun is shining bright outside if you
Would only let it in
Make your mark and stand your ground
You and you because you make a sound
Lay down
Before you get laid out
Lay down
Before you get laid out

I love the stories behind the music and why songs are created in the first place. I especially appreciate deeper themes set to music. It explains why this song has always stuck out to me:). Thanks for sharing.
